Still standing after a millennium, the hulking silhouette of Edinburgh Castle looms over New Town, which is a comparatively (constructed during the 18th century) recent addition to the city on the north side of the castle. Built on a rocky cliff smack-dab in the center of town, the castle is joined to the rest of medieval Edinburgh by the Royal Mile, which starts at the southwest side of the castle and stretches east through Old Town. To the south of the Old Town and Waverly Station, Edinburgh University marks the beginning of the grassy playground of the Meadows. 82060425
