Llanfair P.G. (Llanfairpwllgwyngyll)

It is not clear who actually came up with the new name, but it is thought to be the invention of a cobbler from nearby Menai Bridge.

In the 1880s, in a joking attempt to attract tourists, a tailor added the rest of the syllables, bringing the total length to 58 letters. The village now retains its original name on sign posts, but it is known in Wales as Llanfair PG. If you go to there ask nicely, the lady at the tourist information office will pronounce the name of her town. She gets asked that question at least 30 times a day. Originally the town had a shorter, easier to pronounce name: Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. 82060911
